Farrell's Changed Me

  My first ten-week session with Farrell's Extreme Bodyshaping was a few years back. Basically, I joined because my wife made me. I really did not give a 100%. I showed up every day and just went through the motions. I followed the diet---kind of, and at the end of 10 weeks I did see results. However, I quickly went back to my old ways right after I completed. I slipped back into not exercising, going out to eat versus sticking with the nutrition and I would sit on the couch and eat whatever I wanted. I did not have any goals in place.
Fast forward a few years later.  I went to the doctor for a physical and what I found out was not what any 38-year-old male wants to hear. I found out I was borderline obese according to the BMI chart.  I had high blood pressure, so high that it was in the hypertension category. The doctor told me I was a prime candidate for heart disease, or a heart attack if I did not make some serious changes. I was in shock, I was only 38!  I was in disbelief.  I decided to go back and give the Farrell's program another shot, but for completely different reasons this time.
March of 2014, I started my second go around for the 10-week program. I went in with an attitude that nothing was going to stop me from achieving my goals. My goals initially started out small.  I planned to do more sit ups than I did on day one, I planned to run the mile faster, lose weight, and to get in shape. I found that throughout the program my goals were changing and they grew larger and I became even more active. 
Towards the end of my 10-week session I knew that I was hooked and wanted to increase my goals. A friend of mine is a runner/ triathlete and he had asked me to run a 5K (3.1 miles) with him. My attitude at first was, that I was not a runner.   He continued to trash talk over and over. He talked about how he was going to crush me in this 5 K. My attitude changed and competitiveness kicked in.  Not only was I going to be a runner, but I was not going to lose. I ran the 5 K with him, and not only did I beat him by 2 seconds,  I was 29th of 892 people and 5th of 38 in my age group! What? I was a runner!

I knew that 5 K was not going to be the end.  I set my goals even higher. I was going to participate in a 10 K (6.2 miles) and had less than 1 1/2 months to get ready.  July 25th 2014 came around and I ran the first leg of the 10K so strong that my trash talking buddy decided to turn around at the 5K marker.  He said that there was no way he could catch me and added that he felt that my conditioning for the race was amazing. I ended up 11th overall, and 2nd in my age group. My results shocked me!

My goals were still not complete. I set my next goal to do a 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles) less than 2 months away from my first 10 K . I conditioned to run further distances  but never left my Farrell's training behind.  I knew what it had done for me to this point and how far it would take me to condition for the next level. Race day came around and I shocked myself yet again. Not only did I complete, but once again I did compete. I was 115th out of 1300 people registered for the race, and 8th out of 44 in my age group. I had set a goal for myself to be under 2 hours, and finished in 1 hour 41 minutes, 48 seconds.
Shortly thereafter I had a checkup with my doctor to see how I was doing. My BMI was cut to the normal level, my blood pressure was normal despite that against my doctors wishes I never started taking my blood pressure medications. Everything was now normal just from changing my diet and exercise. 
My next goal was to complete and finish a full Ironman.  I competed in my first triathlon which  was a 0.47 mile swim, 15.6 mile bike, 3.1 mile run in Palo on June 7th , and the Accel sprint triathlon on June 14th.  I won my age division in that triatholon. In 2015 I completed 4 ½ marathons, and my first ½ Ironman triathlon which was a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mike bike ride, and 13.1 mile run. 
2016 has been by far my craziest year ever, and looking back I would have never thought I could do anything even close to this! In April I ran my first full marathon, and in November, my second. Throwing in an additional 4 ½ marathons this year, 2 ½ Ironman competitions  and on August 21st of this year, my dream of finishing a full Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) became a reality in Cour d’Alene, Idaho! I finished with a time of 14:59:28 which was good enough for 606th place out of over 3,000 people, on a day that 30% of the field did not finish due to weather conditions. 
You can see how my goals have changed dramatically since March 2014. Set your own goals. If you start off small make sure to adjust them Do not limit yourself.  Always have a goal to work for. If you don't have a goal in mind, you are just going through the motions. Set your goals high because you all are capable of so much more than you could ever imagine!  To think this level of competitiveness started due to a 10 week Farrell's class that I still religiously attend every day.
I owe everything to the Farrell’s program, the staff and instructors for getting me to where I am today. The program has led me to believe that I could do anything, that anything is truly possible, if you just try, commit and work hard the sky is truly the limit! Farrell's not only changed me into who I am but probably literally saved my life as well.
